If Kate needs the radio to keep her happy, and you need silence, have you considered earplugs? Boots sell a variety of foam and wax ones. One of our sound recordists (Andy) swears by the wax ones for getting a good night’s sleep when in rowdy hotels etc on location.
I use the foam ones when the student’s downstairs are playing explosions and gunfire computer games at ungodly hours of the night/morning. They don’t cut out all sound, but reduce it to an ignorable level.
When someone suggested earplugs, I thought that they were being facetious. Perhaps not…thanks for the suggestion.
I actually got through the first of the three weeks by working post-lecture in the library. If I can get through the same process in two weeks, that only leaves next week to contend with.
